The Song Hunters – Suppression and Survival

Suppression and Survival

This program follows the singer and song collector Sam Lee’s exploration of folk and religious vocal music on a visit to Tbilisi and the surrounding area in Georgia. It contains interviews (including the moving stories of how one man single-handedly saved the archive of sacred music and of how a song cured a child of whooping cough) and field recordings of some quite extraordinary polyphonic singing. The warmth, hospitality and generosity of the Georgian musicians is clear from the narrator’s words. This is a country where music plays a fundamental part of daily life in connecting people.   The next program in the series explores one of the oldest folk singing traditions in the mountains of Greece and will be available on 2nd May 2019.
