The Wintery Field

King1

In a wintery field
the hazel tree
held tight catkins
stiff on the bough.
Now hanging long
and loose in a jug,
the yellow pollen
powders the table…

and the cloth
and the telephone
and my glasses
and the newspaper
my porridge
my toast and jam
my cup of tea
the gas bill
my latest poem
and the hand
that writes it.
